Stay One More Night – Marie Little!

One of our favourite songs!

Marie Little introduced us to this great song by Martin Francis a while ago and it has been a firm favourite ever since. Dot often starts off our Thursday sessions leading it.

Here is Marie leading us in her version at the “sing around” at our weekend away last November in Wooler, accompanied by The Attic Band and Keith Perry on lead ukulele:

Martin Francis’s original version has more verses than this. Also, over the years that Marie has been covering it, the lyrics have shifted and morphed a bit too. I think that means it is a proper Folk Song!

Many thanks to Marie for permission to upload this video to YouTube so we can use it for practice between sessions.

If there are any errors in the Song Sheet, or in the chords and lyrics in the video subtitles, they are my mistakes not Marie’s!

Elton Ritchie’s Open Mic Tips

http://www.lovetoplayguitar.co.uk

  • If you are visiting a venue for the first time it is a good idea to ring ahead to ensure that the event is on.
  • It will help your preparation to attend a couple of sessions before you plan to perform. Visit a few before deciding on where to do your first performance. Trust your instincts. Some places ‘feel’ better than others and each open mic has it’s own culture. Some have a very supportive clientele. Some are just unpleasant.
  • Arrive early and be prepared to wait if you want to perform. The more often you attend the more likely you are to get a slot.
  • Make a note of what songs are being played by the other performers. Try not to duplicate other people’s material. Continue reading

Del Rey Played Newcastle – and won our hearts! @thecumby

Another wonderful workshop and fantastic performance by Del Rey at The Cumberland Arms on Wed 2nd September!

Keith Perry very kindly took group photo’s before the Ukulele Workshop and Aaron Tucker snapped away indoors!

There were over forty people at Del’s guitar and ukulele performance – the biggest turnout so far!

Some of the comments posted online, from people who travelled from across the north east and Cumbria:

“Went to see Del Ray at The Cumberland Arms in Byker the other night. I thought it was brilliant.  Mesmerising”

“Thoroughly enjoyed it last night . . . Del Rey, what a talented lady and a good sense of humour!! Looking forward to next year and finishing my “homework!!”

“What a great night!”

“Truly awesome – you had to be there!”

Many thanks to everyone who took video and uploaded it to YouTube – especially to Paul Hurrell, who not only captured Del’s “Workshop Highlights” but all of her performance!

“Sunny” by Bobby Hebb – a song for the Sunday Summer Break

Collage of clips from YouTube videos of versions of Sunny

A lovely song to while away the summer – with some links to stuff that you might find useful for finding and learning other songs!

There are some beautiful ukulele versions of “Sunny” on the internet, both sung and instrumental. None of the versions here have been recorded as a tutorial, with the purpose of teaching someone how to play the song.  I just liked these ones. There are many other versions that I liked too but I had to stop somewhere and 10, including Bobby Hebb’s original, seemed like a good place to draw the line.

My top pick for the easiest arrangement to play and sing is by NGUYEN DINH Quoc-Huy.
